Provided are tetraazapyrene compounds of formula (I) and their use as n-type semiconductors. In formula (I), R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , at each occurrence, independently are selected from H, a C 1-30 alkyl group, a C 1-30 alkoxy group, a C 1-30 alkylthio group, a C 6-14 aryl group, a C 6-14 aryloxy group, a C 6-14 arylthio group, a C 7-20 arylalkyl group, CI and Br; R 5 , R 6 , at each occurrence, independently are selected from H, a C 1-30 alkyl group, a Cy 1-30 haloalkyl group, a C 6-14 aryl group and a C 7-20 arylalkyl group, wherein aryl and arylalkyl can be optionally substituted with one or more halogen, C 1-4 haloalkyl, -CN, -NO 2 , -CHO, -COOH, -CONH 2 , -CO(C 1-14 alkyl), -COO(C 1-14 alkyl), CONHC(C 1-14 alkyl) and -CON(C 1-14 alkyl) 2 groups, with the proviso that at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 is a C 6-14 aryloxy, a C 6-14 arylthio Igroup, CI or Br.
