abstract The present invention relates to a novel composite of silica aerogel and a hydrogel and a method for the sequential formation thereof. The composite was synthesized by encapsulation of hydrophobic aerogels with PEG hydrogel via photoinitiated polymerization. The aerogel-hydrogel composite of the present invention consists of two layers: the outer hydrogel layer is hydrophilic, whereas the inner aerogel core is hydrophobic.
