titleOfInvention Composite load bearing panels, resin-impregnated fibre mats and methods for their manufacture
abstract A composite load bearing panel has a sandwich construction with a paper or card cellular core and upper and lower skin layers comprising natural fibre and cured bio-resin. The bio-resin is furan resin. In the method of manufacture, a wet sandwich construction is provided in which the core is contacted on each side with partially resin-impregnated natural fibre mats. For each mat, first and second bio-resins are impregnated into first and second faces of the mat. The second face of each mat is contacted with the core. The wet sandwich construction is then pressed and heated in a moulding press so as to compress the impregnated natural fibre mat and cure the first and second bio-resins. The second bio-resin differs from the first bio-resin in that the second bio-resin cures faster and/or at a lower temperature than the first bio-resin. This allows the early curing of the second bio-resin in the curing step and improved mechanical properties for the panel.
