abstract The present invention relates to novel bis-maleic anhydrides. It especially relates to the discovery that bis-maleic anhydride cross-linking agents can be used for preservation/fixation of a cell or tissue sample. With great advantage a bis-maleic anhydride cross-linking agent can be used in methods requiring fixation of a cell or tissue sample and at the same time requiring that the fixative has little impact on the later detection of a protein or a nucleic acid in procedures like immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization or RT-PCR.
