abstract A switch (9) for alternating current of higher power flowing through a load (6) has two antiparallel connected thyristors (12, 13) each with associated ignition device (14, 15) and an auxiliary device (18, 19) for securing the holding current to high-impedance load having for each thyristor (12, 13) an auxiliary power source (18, 19) which is connected with its positive pole to the anode and with its negative pole to the cathode of its associated thyristor (12, 13) and the like is controlled, that during the times in which the thyristor (12, 13) is to be conductive, generates a current which is equal to or greater than the holding current of the thyristor (12, 13).
