Electrode active material comprising a compound of the formula A a + x ¢ M¹ 1 + x / 2 ¢ M ¢ º 1 - a / 2 ¢ P 1 - x ¢ S ¢ i x ¢ O 4 , nwherein (a) A is selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, and mixtures thereof, where 0 < a < 1.0 and x = 0; (b) M' comprises one or more +2 oxidation state transition metals; and (c) M" comprises one or more +2 oxidation state non transition metals; wherein M', M", a, and x are selected so as to maintain electroneutrality of said compound. In a preferred embodiment, A is Li. In another preferred embodiment, M' is selected from the group consisting of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Fe, Ni, Cu, and mixtures thereof. In another preferred embodiment, M" is selected from the group consisting of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and mixtures thereof. This invention also provides electrodes comprising an electrode active material of this invention, and batteries that comprise a first electrode having an electrode active material of this invention; a second electrode; and an electrolyte. |
