abstract The present invention relates to a method for the semiquantitative determination of cariogenic bacteria in a salivary and / or plaque sample, in which the microorganisms contained in a plaque or saliva sample are brought into contact with a C source, which ferments from the cariogenic bacteria to acid becomes. The microorganisms are then incubated under conditions that allow selective acidification by the cariogenic bacteria. Acid formation is then detected by measuring the pH at least once within a period of 12 hours after addition of the C source, with semiquantitative determination of the cariogenic bacteria in the sample by comparing the pH to at least one reference value. The invention further provides kits for carrying out such methods.
