titleOfInvention | GDF-15 based means and methods for survival and recovery prediction in acute inflammation |
abstract | The present invention relates to the field of diagnostic measures. Specifically, it relates to a method for diagnosing whether a subject suffering from an acute inflammation and, preferably, systemic inflammtory response syndrome (SIRS), is at increased risk for mortality, said method comprises determining the amount of the biomarker GDF-15 in a sample of said subject and comparing said amount to a reference whereby an increased risk for mortality is to be diagnosed. Moreover, the present invention relates to a method for monitoring the development of acute inflammation in a subject suffering therefrom comprising determining the amount of the biomarker GDF-15 in a first and a second sample of said subject wherein said first sample has been obtained prior to said second sample and comparing the amount of GDF-15 in said first and said second sample wherein an increase in the GDF-15 amount is indicative for a diagnosis of progression of acute inflammation whereas a decrease in the amount of GDF-15 is indicative for the diagnosis of an amelioration of said acute inflammation. Further encompassed are diagnostic devices and kits for carrying out the aforementioned methods. |
