abstract |
The invention relates to a phosphorus-containing flame retardant, which is obtainable by i) reacting a phosphorus compound selected from the group consisting of DOPO and nucleus-substituted DOPO derivatives with an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol to form a phosphorus diester containing hydroxyl groups; ii) further reaction of at least part of the hydroxyl groups with a bifunctional phosphorus compound selected from the group consisting of carboxyl-containing phosphinic acids, their anhydrides and carboxylic acid esters and the dicarboxylic monoesters of polyalkylene glycol phosphonates and polyalkylene glycol phosphates; iii) reaction of the unreacted hydroxyl groups in step ii) with another unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride; and iv) reaction of the reaction product obtained in step iii) with a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic oxirane compound. |
