abstract The invention relates to a coating method for a work piece, comprising the following steps: a) applying a coating liquid onto the work piece, wherein the coating liquid comprises an ionic liquid containing ions of at least one element, b) electrochemically depositing a layer of the at least one element from the coating liquid onto the work piece, c) removing the work piece from the coating liquid, d) removing excess coating liquid from the work piece. In order to provide an industrially suitable coating process, particularly for work pieces having a metal surface, at least in sections, using stable, durable baths, the invention provides that the temperature of the coating liquid, and/or the temperature of the work piece are set such that the temperature of the coating liquid deviates from a predetermined target temperature by no more than 10°C during the coating process.
