Rapid cell block embedding method and apparatus |
abstract |
A cassette (30) for capturing in a disk of hardened wax a sample of cell fragments from reagents flowing along a cell flow pathway, the cassette including a filter to filter the fragments from the reagents and then embed the fragments on the filter in said wax to leave the disk of wax protruding from the cassette with the embedded cell fragments at a plane at which a tissue section can be cut with a microtome, the cassette including: ni) a cylindrical port (36) which extends from a top surface (32) through a bottom surface (34) of the cassette and defines said cell flow pathway and in which the disk of wax is created, nii) a filter (40) with a pore size of less than 12µm, thereby to trap cellular matter; and niii) a porous filter support (60) on which the filter rests, and through which the reagent fluids can pass, and configured to conduct heat, in order to maintain the wax melted and to speed up the process of hardening the wax. |
