abstract |
A method of improving hydraulic performance of clay comprising its modification by the addition to the clay of a silica component containing free silica or a siliceous material. The clay is advantageously a swelling sodium bentonite clay with smectite content greater than 70 wt%. The modified clay may be employed in geosynthetic clay liners used for the containment of strong alkaline solutions as well as other barrier systems. |
