The invention relates to a method of screening a subject for at least one risk factor associated with a neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease comprising detecting the presence or absence of at least one risk marker in the HtrA1 gene (PRSS11). Furthermore, diagnostic kits as well as therapeutic approaches are provided. The risk marker is rs11200638. Moreover, methods for proteolysis or degradation of tau using HtrA1 are provided. |
