abstract The invention relates to a compact high-voltage impulse generator based on a spiral impulse generator which is entirely or partially surrounded by a ferritic material. The invention also relates to a coating method for coating a spiral impulse generator with a ferritic layer, according to which the spiral impulse generator is either immersed into a low-viscosity slurry, and sintered at temperatures of between 500°C and 900°C once the slurry has been dried, or is surrounded by a ferritic casting compound which is then hardened thermally or by UV radiation. The invention also relates to a high-pressure discharge lamp comprising a discharge vessel which is received in an outer piston. An ignition device generating high-voltage impulses in the lamp is built into the lamp and is a spiral impulse generator received in the outer piston and acting as an ignition transformer due to the fact that it is entirely or partially surrounded by a ferritic material.
