titleOfInvention Implantable medical device having optical fiber for sensing electrical activity
abstract This invention relates to an implantable medical device for optically detecting action potential signals in an excitable tissue of the body. The device includes an elongate tubular lead body carrying an optical fiber extending from a proximal lead end to a distal lead end so as to place the optical fiber at a target site. The shunt body also carries a conduit that delivers a voltage-sensitive fluorescent dye to the tissue surrounding the target site. The optical fiber transmits excitation light to the fluorescent dye causing it to fluoresce, the intensity of which varies due to the transmembrane potentials of the local tissue cells that change as a function of the circulating depolarization wavefronts. The optical fiber transmits the fluorescence signal to the device that generates an action potential signal or calibration points of a useable action potential signal (s) to accurately measure and characterize the electrical activity of the excitable tissue .
