abstract An improved consumable for use in a fluid/gas exchange in vitreoretinal surgery. The consumable includes a syringe having a barrel with a first opening for receiving a retinal tamponading gas, a stopper slidably disposed within and fluidly sealed to the barrel, a plug assembly, and a plunger. The plug assembly facilitates both the filling of the syringe with retinal tamponading gas as well as the injection of the tamponading gas into the eye.
