titleOfInvention Vehicle control apparatus and method
abstract A vehicle control apparatus is provided which: when predetermined conditions, which include the shift position of the automatic transmission (20) being in the drive position, arc satisfied, executes a neutral control that forcibly places the automatic transmission (20) in a substantially neutral state; and when it is determined that the amount (PMA) of exhaust matter (PM) accumulated in a catalyst (30) provided in the exhaust system of the vehicle has exceeded a first reference value (PMt1), executes a catalyst heating control that increases the temperature of the catalyst (30) so as to remove the exhaust matter (PM) accumulated in the catalyst (30). The vehicle control apparatus prohibits the execution of the neutral control when it is determined during the catalyst heating control that the amount (PMA) of the exhaust matter (PM) accumulated in the catalyst (30) has exceeded a second reference value (PMt2) larger than the first reference value (PMt1).
