| abstract | A needle assembly (10, 110, 210, 210’, 310, 410, 610) is able to collect a sample of biological material in a needle (14, 114, 214, 214’, 314, 414, 614, 766, 820, 840, 850) of the assembly. The needle assembly has a safety shield (16, 116, 216, 216’, 316, 416, 516, 616, 769, 801, 821, 832, 832’, 916) capable of being moved on the needle assembly to cover a sharp tip (28, 428, 628) of the needle assembly. The shield can be locked in place over the sharp tip by a locking mechanism (52, 152, 252, 252’, 352, 452, 552, 652, 760, 814, 952).
