abstract [Problems] n To provide a mercury-free metal halide discharge lamp and a metal halide discharge lamp system for lighting the same of the dc lighting type with reduced inter-electrode color temperature difference. n [Means of solving problems] n A metal halide discharge lamp includes a fire-resistant and light-transmitting hermetic vessel 1, a pair of electrodes 2A, 2B sealed within the hermetic vessel 1, and a discharge medium containing a halide and a rare gas and essentially not containing mercury and sealed within the hermetic vessel 1, wherein a polarity of a lamp current flowing in the hermetic vessel is a single polarity not changing with time and the lamp is lighted so that a discharge arc of the discharge medium is corrected in a direction of a straight line connecting the electrodes using an acoustic resonance phenomenon.
