titleOfInvention Monitoring of the state of the central nervous system of a subjet
abstract The invention relates to a method and apparatus for monitoring the state of the central nervous system of a subject. In order to improve the performance of patient monitoring methods employing EMG measurement an electrode configuration with a multi-dimensional electrode unit, constructed to record motor unit action potentials from an underlying facial muscle, is positioned (21) onto a facial area of a subject. The firing rate of the facial muscle is determined (24) based on the motor unit action potentials acquired through the multi-dimensional electrode and the firing rate is utilized (25), as such or in combination with another parameter, as an indication of the state of the central nervous system of the subject.
