abstract A β-benzyloxyaspartic acid derivative having two substituents on the benzene ring. It has L-glutamic acid uptake inhibitory activity. It is a compound of the formula (1) (wherein R1 represents an optionally substituted aromatic group and substituent R2 represents a group selected among optionally substituted linear or branched C1-30 aliphatic groups optionally having nitrogen or oxygen in the chain and optionally substituted aromatic groups) or a salt of the compound. The compound serves to inhibit the glutamic acid uptake activity of an L-glutamic acid transporter. Also provided are a process for producing the compound and a method of purifying or detecting an L-glutamic acid transporter with the compound.
