abstract The approximate location (902) of a directed cell (132, 134, 136) of a cellular network (122) is calculated based on locations in the vicinity of which mobile devices (138) were able to detect the directed cell (132, 134, 136). A mobile device (1100) is able to estimate its own location from the approximate locations (902) of one or more directed cells (132, 134, 136) that it can identify. This estimated location of the mobile device (1100) may be used to seed its GPS receiver (204).
