A metal complex compound represented by general formula (1). There is also provided an organic electroluminescent element which has high luminescence efficiency and a prolonged service life. The organic electroluminescent element comprises an organic thin film layer having a single or multilayer structure including at least a luminescent layer held between a pair of electrodes, wherein at least one layer in the organic thin film layer contains the above metal complex compound. (L1)mM(L2)n (1) wherein M represents Ir, Pt, and Rh; L1 and L2 represent mutually different bidentate ligands; (L1)mM as a partial structure is represented by general formula (2) and M(L2)n as a partial structure is represented by general formula (3); and m and n are an integer of 1 or 2, provided that m + n is an integer of 2 or 3.
