titleOfInvention | Hybrid ion mobility and mass spectrometer |
abstract | A hybrid ion mobility and time-of-flight mass spectrometer (30) includes an ion source region (32) coupled to an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) (34) which feeds directly into an ion accelerating region of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) (36). In one embodiment, the TOFMS (36) is positioned relative to the IMS (34) so that the flight tube axis (128) of the TOFMS (36) is perpendicular to the drift tube axis (72) of the IMS (34). In an alternate embodiment, the TOFMS (36) is positioned relative to the IMS (34) so that the flight tube axis (128) is non-perpendicular to the drift tube axis (72) of the IMS (34). In the alternate embodiment, a known quadruple ion trap is positioned between the IMS (34) and the TOFMS (36) to provide the capability of controlling the injection of ion packets into the TOFMS (36). The ion source (74) may be a MALDI source, an electrospray ion source, or an ion trap positioned between the IMS (34) and any known ion source. In each case, the IMS (34), TOFMS (36) and ion sources (74) are preferably controlled by a computer (38). |
