Oral formulations for promoting eye health, and in particular for preventing or treating macular degeneration, are disclosed, containing: (i) zeaxanthin, a carotenoid, as a crucial and essential ingredient; (ii) a dosage of elemental zinc not exceeding about 40 mg/day, and preferably in a range of about 10 to about 30 mg/day; and, (iii) at least two or more additional ocular-active nutrients that provide synergistic eye and vision benefits when combined with zeaxanthin and zinc, selected from lipoic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, plant-derived compounds such as flavonoids, anthocyanins, or polyphenolics, taurine, carnitine, Coenzyme-Q10, carnosine, nutrients such as N-acetyl cysteine that stimulate the production of glutathione, and folic acid. Dosage ranges are specified for: (i) high-dosage therapeutic supplements for treating patients suffering from a known and ongoing ocular problem; and, (ΓΌ) lower-dosage sustenance or preventive supplements for preventing problems and for preserving eye health and vision in people who are not currently suffering from an ongoing ocular problem. |
