titleOfInvention | Improved geometry and material for use in high strength high flexibility controlled recoil drug eluting stents |
abstract | A biocompatible material may be configured into any number of implantable medical devices including intraluminal stents. The biocompatible material may comprise metallic and non-metallic materials. These materials may be designed with a microstructure that facilitates or enables the design of devices with a wide range of geometries adaptable to various loading conditions. Both the load bearing elements and the substantially non-load bearing elements may utilize these materials. Additionally, therapeutic agents may be incorporated into the microstructure or the bulk material. n In one embodiment, a drug eluting intraluminal scaffold (100) comprises: a plurality of hoop components (102) being configured to be the primary radial load-bearing elements of the intraluminal scaffold; and one or more connector elements (104) having at least one substantially longitudinally oriented strut member (106) and at least one arc member (108), the one or more connector elements connecting adjacent hoop components to form a substantially tubular structure having a luminal surface and an abluminal surface, the one or more connector elements having a predetermined wall thickness, wherein the wall thickness is defined by the radial distance between the luminal surface and the abluminal surface, and a predetermined feature width, wherein an area bounded by the wall thickness and the feature width comprises a plurality of zones undergoing at least one of tensile, compressive or substantially zero stress change due to external loading, both the substantially longitudinally oriented strut member and the at least one arc member are fabricated from a metallic material processed to have a microstructure with a granularity of about 32 µm (32 microns) or less and at least one internal grain boundary within the bounded area and wherein at least one of the plurality of hoop components and the one or more connector elements comprises a modified surface structure for incorporation of one or more therapeutic agents. |
