abstract The invention relates to a method in which the molecular weight can be reproducibly controlled and reduced during poly(arylene vinylene) synthesis performed by means of GILCH polymerization or the sulfinyl precursor route by adding certain bis(methyl)aryl compounds that carry an additional substituent with the exception of hydrogen and a nucleofuge on at least one of the two methyl groups. Also disclosed are the polymers that can be obtained by means of the inventive method.
