titleOfInvention | Method for improving the adhesion of the intermediate layer in a multi-layer paint finish |
abstract | Improving interlayer adhesion in multi-layer coatings made by a wet-in-wet process involves using an aqueous basecoat based on a binder dispersion comprising a graft copolymer with a hydrophobic core and a hydrophilic shell, obtained by polymerising olefinic monomers in presence of a polyurethane containing unsaturated groups, e.g. ethenylarylene groups. A method for improving interlayer adhesion in multi-layer paint systems made by an integrated wet-in-wet process involves (I) applying and optionally drying primer layer(s) (1) with or without complete hardening, (II) applying water-based paint (2) and optionally drying (without complete hardening) to form layer(s) (2), (III) applying more water-based paint (3) and optionally drying as above to form layer(s) (3), (IV) applying an intrinsically-viscous coating powder slurry (4) made by (a) a secondary dispersion process involving emulsifying an organic solution of binder and crosslinker to give an oil-in-water emulsion, removing solvent and replacing it with water to give a slurry with spherical, dimensionally-stable particles, or (b) a melt-emulsion process in which at least one component in the liquid (preferably molten) state is emulsified in aqueous medium and then cooled to give particles as above, and then optionally drying the resulting clearcoat ( 4), and (V) hardening all the above layers together. The binder used in paint (2) (stage II) contains dispersed particles of graft copolymer(s) (A/B) comprising a hydrophobic core (A) derived from olefinic monomer(s) (a) and a hydrophilic shell containing polyurethane(s) (B), obtained by radical (co)polymerisation of monomers (a) in presence of polyurethane(s) (B) containing at least one of the following unsaturated groups: lateral and terminal ethenylarylene groups, lateral olefinic groups attached to cycloaliphatic groups in the main polymer chain, lateral cyclo-olefinic groups forming part of the main chain, terminal olefinic groups attached to cycloaliphatic groups at the chain ends, terminal cyclo-olefinic groups at the chain ends, or lateral and terminal olefinic groups obtained by reaction of polyurethanes with anhydrides of alpha ,beta -unsaturated carboxylic acids. |
