abstract |
A composition which comprises an animal cellnpopulation, and which contains immature animal cells.nThe immature animal cells are characterized bynexpression of alpha-fetoprotein or lack of essentialnexpression of alpha-fetoprotein and albumin, and atnleast a portion of said immature animal cells or atnleast a portion of the progeny of said immature cellsnis capable of differenting into cells which expressnalbumin. The cell population is cultured undernconditions which result in expansion of the cells.nExpansion of the cells may be achieved by culturingnthe cells in the presence of an extracellular matrixnand liver stromal cells; and preferably in thenpresence of growth factors. Such cells may be usednfor liver transplantation, artificial livers, and forntoxicology and pharmacology studies. Such cells maynalso be genetically engineered to express proteins ornpolypeptides of interest. |
