abstract Disclosed herein is a fuel cell which utilizes thenbiogenic metabolism to produce a high current density. Itngenerates electric power in such a way that the fuel isndecomposed stepwise by a plurality of enzymes and thosenelectrons formed by oxidation are transferred to the electrode.nThe enzymes work such that the enzyme activity ofnthe enzyme involved in decomposition in the early stage isnsmaller than the sum of the enzyme activities of the enzymesninvolved in decomposition in the later stage. In thencase where a coenzyme is involved, the enzyme activity ofnthe oxidase that oxidizes the coenzyme is greater than thensum of the enzyme activities of the enzymes involved in thenformation of the reductant of the coenzyme, out of thenenzymes involved in the stepwise decomposition of the fuel.
