abstract |
Composition (A) for prophylactic and/or curative topical treatment of diseases of the teeth and gums comprises, apart from a carrier, verbena (I) (Verbena officinalis) and/or ribwort plantain (II) (Plantago lanceolata), or their ingredients or extracts. ACTIVITY : Antiinflammatory; Antibacterial. A 1:1 mixture of: (a) an extract of V. officinalis of ethanol content 63.3%; and (b) an extract of P. lanceolata of ethanol content 63.8% was tested for inhibition of oral bacteria by DIN 58940 and 58944. At a final concentration of 0.63%, the mixture prevented growth of all of Actinomyces viscosus; Fusobacterium nucleatum; Porphyromonas gingivalis; Streptococcus mutans; S. salivarius; S. sanguinis and S. sobrinus. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given. |
