abstract | The invention relates to a method for producing monodisperse gel-type ion exchangers with a particle size of between 5 and 500 ñm. Said exchangers are obtained as follows: a) production of a non-cross linked monodisperse seed polymer with a particle size of between 0.5 and 20 ñm by the radically initiated polymerisation of monoethylenically unsaturated compounds in the presence of a non-aqueous solvent, b) addition of an active monomer mixture containing styrene as the feed for said seed polymer; the monomer mixture is then left to swell into the seed and the product is polymerised at high temperature; optionally the steps involving the addition of the monomer mixture, the swelling process and polymerisation are repeated once or several times, the monomer mixture during the final addition containing between 2 and 50 wt. % of a cross linking agent and c) functionalisation of the polymer using a sulphonating agent either into cation exchangers, or by amidomethylation with a subsequent hydrolysis, or chloromethylation with subsequent amination into anion exchangers. |
