abstract An apparatus for inspecting the quality of a body having a surface exhibiting edge-defined structuring and substantially edge-free unevenness, wherein the patterning is quality degradation and the unevenness represents a potential quality degradation, comprises means (10) for generating a height representation the height representation of the surface embraces the structuring and rub. A variation representation calculating means (12) calculates, for each point of the height representation, the variation associated with the point so that a large variation is obtained at a boundary of the patterning while a small variation is obtained at a boundary of the asperity. A means (14) for detecting areas which are potentially degrading quality, detects areas as potentially degrading quality which have a variation which is smaller in magnitude than a predetermined variation threshold. These potentially degraded areas can then be further investigated according to various criteria (16) in order to exclude the uncritical areas and to find out from the set of potentially degrading areas only the areas that are actually affecting quality. This can be a safe quality control of vehicle tires on which a font is attached as a structuring, and which bulges or constrictions have as substantially edge-free bumps can be achieved.
