abstract A measuring apparatus has a housing; a probe assembly at the forward end comprising an inert gas generating mechanism having a source of inert gas, a conduit for channeling gas at the forward end, and a mechanism for providing a stable volume of inert gas; a radiation beam assembly having a mechanism for generating a beam of radiation; and a detector for receiving detectable species and for detecting the property of a liquid. The measuring apparatus comprises a housing; a probe assembly at the forward end of the housing and comprising an inert gas generating mechanism having a source of inert gas, a conduit for channeling inert gas at the forward end of the housing, and a mechanism for providing a stable volume of inert gas at the interface of the forward end of the housing and liquid, and a mechanism for removing the probe assembly to any depth or angle in the liquid; a radiation beam assembly having a mechanism for generating a beam of radiation to vaporize a portion of the liquid into a detectable species, a mechanism for transmitting the radiation beam through the forward end of the housing and the interface of the liquid and the stable volume of inert gas; and a detector for receiving detectable species and for detecting the property of a liquid from such species. An independent claim is also included for measuring the property of a liquid comprising placing the above measuring apparatus and measuring the property of the liquid from the detectable species.
