Metadata may be generated (14) for individual segments within a program, each of which is treated as a separate programming event. The metadata may be used to determine programming events of interest for recording (124) or for generating alert banners (130). Timing data for synchronizing the recording device to the programming event may be provided in a closed caption data stream (258).
