abstract | An electro-release system, for example for use innreleasing a pharmaceutical compound, has an electrode andna layer structure on said electrode releasably holding annelectro-releasable compound. The layer structurencomprises at least one functional compound providing anfirst functional group forming an ionic bond with thenelectro-releasable compound and a second functional groupnwhich, on application of an appropriate voltage bias tonthe electrode, generates protons which break the ionicnbond, thereby controlling release of the electro-releasablencompound. Also disclosed are modifiednelectrodes useful in such an electro-release system andnhaving polymer bilayers based on polypyrrole ornpolythiophene with the two layers carrying differentnsubstituents giving different functionality ornreactivity. |
