titleOfInvention | Organosol including amphipathic copolymeric binder made with soluble high tg monomer and liquid toners for electrographic applications |
abstract | The invention provides liquid toner compositions innwhich the polymeric binder is chemically grown in the formnof copolymeric binder particles dispersed in a liquidncarrier. The polymeric binder includes one amphipathicncopolymer that comprises the residue of a Soluble High T g nMonomer. The toners described herein exhibit surprisinglynlow fusion temperatures, yet are surprisingly resistant tonblocking, are non-tacky and are resistant to marring andnundesired erasure. n Specifically, the present invention provides a liquidnelectrophotographic toner composition comprising:n a) a liquid carrier having a Kauri-Butanolnnumber less than about 30 mL; and b) a plurality of toner particles dispersednin the liquid carrier, wherein the toner particlesncomprise polymeric binder comprising at least onenamphipathic copolymer comprising one or more Snmaterial portions and one or more D materialnportions, wherein one or more of the S or D materialnportions comprises the residue of a Soluble High T g nMonomer having a T g at least about 20°C, wherein:n the absolute difference in Hildebrand solubilitynparameters between the Soluble High Tg Monomer andnthe liquid carrier is less than about 3 MPa 1/2 ; and the D portions of the amphipathic copolymer eachnhave a T g at least about 30°C, n a method of making a liquid electrophotographic tonerncomposition comprising steps of:n a) providing a dispersion of amphipathicncopolymer in a liquid carrier having a Kauri-Butanolnnumber less than about 30 mL, wherein saidnamphipathic copolymer comprises one or more Snmaterial portions and one or more D materialnportions, wherein one or more of the S or D materialnportions comprises the residue of a Soluble High T g nMonomer having a T g at least about 20°C, wherein:n the absolute difference in Hildebrand solubilitynparameters between the Soluble High T g Monomer and the liquid carriernis less than about 3 MPa 1/2 ; and the D portions of the amphipathic copolymer eachnhave a T g at least about 30°C; and b) mixing the dispersion with one or moreningredients comprising at least one visualnenhancement additive under conditions effective tonform a plurality of toner particles, n and a method of electrophotographically forming annimage on a substrate surface comprising steps of:n a) providing a liquid toner composition asnhereinbefore defined; b) causing an image comprising the tonernparticles to be formed on the substrate surface; c) fusing said image on the substratensurface. |
