titleOfInvention | Method for killing insects |
abstract | A pesticidal composition comprises a first component having chelating agent and/or metal complex of a chelating agent; and a carrier material edible to insect pests. The composition kills insect pests upon ingestion. An independent claim is also included for killing insect pests by applying the above pesticidal composition to an area infested with insect pests, such that the insect pests can ingest the pesticidal composition. ACTIVITY : Pesticide; Insecticide. A formulation comprised of 10% sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and 25% sucrose was applied to glass microscope slides. For fresh treatments, slides were allowed to dry overnight. For storage treatments, slides were prepared 20 days previously and left uncovered prior to use. Adult houseflies (4 day old) were anesthetized with carbon dioxide and transferred to 250 ml clear plastic cups containing a treated microscope slide, small amount of granulated sugar and a water reservoir. Cups were covered with fine netting secured with rubber bands. Treatments consisted of 8 replicates of 5 insect pests each. Mortality was assessed 3 and 6 days after the fly introduction. The results at 20 days storage conditions exhibited a mean mortality of 47.5% at 3 days and 92.5% at 6 days. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given. |
