titleOfInvention Optical communication devices and their operation
abstract An optical communication device (especially annelectroabsorption modulator) and a method of operating it innwhich the operation of the device requires light to benabsorbed progressively as it is passed through the activenabsorbing zone of the device and in which the light signal isnamplified within the length of the active absorbing zone. n Two distinct structures for implementing the inventionnare proposed:n In the first, the device is subdivided into segmentsnwhich are interconnected so as to perform substantially thensame function and at least one semiconductor opticalnamplifier stage is interposed between its segments, andnoptionally before the first and/or after the last segment; In the second, an optical waveguide is formed in whichnthe mode field is, for at least a substantial length, partlyncontained in an active absorbing layer of the device andnpartly in a semiconductor optical amplifier layer, so thatnmodulation due to electroabsorption (or other electro-opticalneffect or optically actuated effect or photodetection) isnaccompanied by simultaneous amplification. n Ideally the degree of amplification will be such thatnthe optical amplitude is substantially constant (ornsubstantially the same at the corresponding place in eachnsegment).
