abstract The present invention relates to a process for preparingncopolymer hydrogels with controlled molecular weights andnhaving both thermo- and pH- responsive properties, wherein thenprocess comprises the steps of (a) providing sulfonamide typenstyrenic or (meth)acrylamide-based monomers exhibitingndifferent p K a values; (b) providing poly( N -isopropylacrylamide)nor crosslinked poly( N -isopropylacrylamide - co - methylenenbisacrylamide) hydrogels having thermo-responsive properties;nand (c) providing several hydrogels exhibiting pH-sensitivenproperties and random or block copolymerizations of thensulfonamide type styrenic or (meth)acrylamide-based monomersnprepared in step (a) with N -isopropylacrylamide and/ornmethylene bisacrylamide monomers used in step (b) in a polar ornnon-polar solvent; wherein said steps (b) and (c) are carriednout by controlled/living radical polymerization using alkylnhalides as the initiators and the transition metals withnphosphine or amine ligands as the catalysts. The presentninvention also relates to the copolymer hydrogels made by thenaforesaid process.
