A liquid crystal medium contains (a) a cyclohexylene- or phenylene-difluorophenylene compound; (b) a cyclohexylene-cyclohexylene (or phenylene)-difluorophenylene compound; and (c) a polymerizable compound. A liquid crystal medium contains (a) a cyclohexylene- or phenylene-difluorophenylene compound of formula (I); (b) a cyclohexylene-cyclohexylene (or phenylene)-difluorophenylene compound of formula (II); and (c) a polymerizable compound.
