abstract The invention relates to the multiple photon excitation of a sample (24), whereby a laser beam (10) is split into at least two coherent partial beams (11, 12) of the same intensity distribution about their respective beam axes. The partial beams (11, 12), which originate from different directions, are directed onto a common measuring plane that runs transversely to the beam axes, in such a way that they interfere with one another in the area of the measuring plane. According to the invention, the partial beams (11, 12) are directed towards one another at an inclination angle (14) < 1 and are directed onto the measuring plane by means of a common system of lenses (21), in such a way that an intensity distribution in the area of the measuring plane, caused by the interference of the partial beams (11, 12), comprises areas of maximum intensity adjacent to areas of minimum intensity.
