abstract A honeycomb structure (1) wherein a plurality of honeycomb segments (2) consisting of honeycomb structures having a number of axially extending communication holes (6) separated by partition walls are integrated. A honeycomb structure (1) wherein a compression elastic material (A (3)) is disposed between the outer peripheral surface (21) of one or more honeycomb segments (2 (a)) not forming the outermost peripheral surface (23) of the honeycomb structure (1) and a honeycomb segment (2 (b)) adjoining thereto. A honeycomb structure assembly (8) prepared by compressing and holing the honeycomb structure (1) in a metallic container (11) by arranging a compression elastic material (B (5)) in a compressed state on the outermost peripheral surface (23) of the honeycomb structure (1). This honeycomb structure and assembly are superior in durability and reliability in that the thermal stress is reduced which is produced in the honeycomb structure by sharp changes in inflow gas temperature, local reaction heat and combustion heat during use and in that the honeycomb structure is prevented from being damage.
