titleOfInvention Conversion of aromatic hydrocarbons
abstract A process for the transalkylation of an aromatic feedstock containing a benzenencomponent and a polyalkylated aromatic component comprising at least one polyalkyl aromaticncompound of at least nine carbon atoms. The feedstock is supplied to a reaction zone containingna metal modified zeolite transalkylation catalyst. In one alternative, the process comprisesn (a) providing a catalytic reaction zone containing a metal modifiednzeolite transalkylation catalyst; (b) supplying a toluene-containing feedstock to said reaction zonenwhile operating said reaction zone under conditions effective for thendisproportionation of toluene; (c) recovering a disproportionation product containing benzene andnxylene from said reaction zone; (d) terminating the supply of said toluene-containing feedstock tonsaid reaction zone; (e) thereafter supplying to said reaction zone containing saidnmetal-modified zeolite catalyst a transalkylation feedstock containing anbenzene component and a polyalkylated aromatic component comprising atnleast one polyalkyl aromatic compound having at least nine carbon atoms; (f) operating said reaction zone under conditions effective for thentransalkylation of said feedstock to produce a transalkylated productnhaving a reduced polyalkyl benzene content and an enhanced monoalkylnbenzene content relative to said transalkylation feedstock; and (g) recovering said transalkylated product from said reaction zone. nIn another alternative, the reaction zone is operated under conditionsnproviding an equivalent conversion of pure toluene in the presence of the catalystnwithin the range of 40-55%, resulting in a transalkylated product with a reduced polyalkyl benzene contentnand an enhance monoalkyl benzene content relative to the transalkylation feedstock. Inncontinued operation of the transalkylation reaction zone, at least one of the reaction conditions ofntemperature, pressure, and space velocity is adjusted in order to maintain a constant reactionnseverity to provide a desired equivalent conversion of toluene within a tolerance range of ± 2%.nSpecifically, the temperature is progressively increased while continuing the operation of thentransalkylation zone to maintain a condition of constant reaction severity.
