The present invention is directed to an ambientntemperature molten salt as non-aqueous electrolyte. Thenmolten salt comprises a cation of a guanidine moiety andnan anion. The cation is selected from alkyl groups, nalicyclic groups, or aromatic groups attachednasymmetrically to guanidine. An exemplary salt isntetramethylguanidinimum bis-trifluoromethanesulfonylnimide, which is liquid at ambient temperature and onlynslightly soluble in water. The salt is prepared bynbringing together two aqueous salt solutions, onencontaining tetramethylguanidine hydrochloride, and thenother containing lithium bis -trifluoromethanesulfonylnimide. The electrolyte is useful with electrochemicalndevices such as primary and secondary electrochemicalncells and capacitors, such as of the electrolytic andnelectrolytic/electrochemical hybrid types. |
