titleOfInvention Method for using an MRI compatible biopsy device with detachable probe
abstract A method for performing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) guided core biopsies isntendered more accurate and efficient by precisely positioning a disengaged probenassembly (38) with respect to a localization fixture (16) attached to a breast coil platform (34). Thenprecise position is defined by MRI stereotopic location of suspicious tissue with respectnto a fiducial marker (140) on the localization fixture (16). With the probe inserted, dual lumens innthe probe assembly are used for drainage or insertion of fluids as well as insertingndiagnostic and therapeutic tools. Core biopsies are performed by engaging a biopsyninstrument handle (36) containing a cutter, nwith the localization fixture (16) providing support andnposition to the handle. Repeated MRI scans are facilitated by the ability to disengage thenhandle (36) without risk of displacing the probe assembly from the biopsy site.
