abstract Preparation of carboxyethyl-methylphosphinic acid glycol ester (I) involves: <??>(a) reacting yellow phosphorus with methyl chloride in presence of alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide to give a mixture containing salts of methylphosphonous, phosphorous and hypophosphorous acids as main components; <??>(b) esterifying the methylphosphonous acid; <??>(c) separating the ester and subjecting it to addition reaction with an acrylate ester; <??>(d) hydrolyzing the obtained diester; and <??>(e) esterifying the obtained carboxyethyl-methylphosphinic acid directly with ethylene glycol.
