titleOfInvention Sensor utilizing attenuated total reflection
abstract A sensor comprising a light source (31) for emitting a lightnbeam (30), and a measuring chip (10). The measuring chip includes andielectric block (11) transparent to the light beam (30), a thin film layer (12)nformed on the dielectric block (11), and a liquid-sample holdingnmechanism (13) for holding a liquid sample . The sensor also comprisesnan optical system for making the light beam (30) enter the dielectricnblock (11) at an angle of incidence so that a total internal reflectionncondition is satisfied at an interface (12a) between the dielectricnblock (11) and the thin film layer (12). The sensor further comprises anphotodetector (40) for detecting the intensity of the light beam (30)ntotally reflected at the interface (12a), and a measuring section (61) fornmeasuring a state of attenuated total reflection, based on thenresult of detection obtained by the photodetector (40). Thenirradiation energy of the light beam (30) at the interface (12a)nis 100mJ/mm 2 or less.
