abstract |
Nitrogen is rejected from a feed gas stream comprising methane and nitrogen so asnto form a methane product. The feed gas stream is cooled in a main heatnexchanger 4 and is rectified in a double rectification column 12A comprising a highernpressure rectification column 14A, a lower pressure rectification column 16A, and ancondenser-reboiler 18A placing the higher pressure rectification column 14A in heatnexchange relationship with the lower pressure rectification column 16A. At least partnof the feed gas stream is expanded into the higher pressure rectification column 14Anthrough an expansion valve 23, the feed gas stream being partially liquefiednupstream of the double rectification column 12A. Over a period of time the molenfraction of nitrogen in the feed gas mixture increases. At a suitable increasednnitrogen mole fraction operation of a second double rectification column 12B innparallel with the first double rectification column 12A is commenced. |
