abstract | In a mass spectrometer system, ions travelnthrough an orifice (26) in an inlet plate (28) into a first vacuumnchamber (30) containing AC-only rods (32), and then through annorifice (34) into a second vacuum chamber (38) containing a standardnquadrupole (40). The second vacuum chamber is held atnlow pressure, e.g. .02 millitorr or less, but the productnof the pressure in the first chamber times the length ofnthe AC-only rods is held above 2.25 X 10 -2 torr cm, preferablynbetween 6 X 10 -2 and 15 X 10 -2 torr cm, and thenDC voltage between the inlet plate and the AC-only rodsnis kept low, e.g. between 1 and 30 volts, preferablynbetween 1 and 10 volts. This produces a large enhancementnin ion signal, with less focussing aberration andnbetter sensitivity at high masses, and also allows thenuse of smaller, cheaper pumps so the system can be moreneasily transportable. |
